Honestly I am not into Saree shopping at this time. But wherever your eyes go you will be watching everyone either shopping sarees or talking sarees. The reason obviously is the upcoming Durga Puja 2012 where every woman in this part of the country needs to seen resplendent in that nine yards. Silk, Taant, designer, mutka, chanderi whatever the material is saree is the sure-shot winner here.
So when my friend insisted me to accompany her for a 'saree trying spree' at City Centre two I did not quite find any reason to deny. Here is what I gathered in this trip.
First we headed to the second and third floor shops for sarees and salwars. This is not a surprise though that Bollywood style sarees are slowly becoming favourite for Kolkatans. Large number of shops providing net, Chiffon, geogette etc and enthusiastic buyers prefering them over traditional Bengali preferences like silk, Zamdani, Dhakai or our known kanjibharam, tanjore or Bhagalpuri varieties of traditional silk etc. In almost all the saree shops at City center two (Newtown) we found huge stocks of chiffon, georgette, net or half net with machine embroidery, applique or sequin work. Price ranging from 2600/- to 10-12,000 etc. Georgette sarees starting from slightly less than 3000/ are good at that price but these are not the real stuffs. Actual georgette sarees are available from a price range starting from a little more than 5000/ Rupees.
Designer brands like Oins fanshions, Vermillion, Fabindia have good collection keeping in mind the youngsters who will be choosing Saees for this puja.
